Orifice plate taps are small holes or ports drilled into a pipeline at specific locations to measure the pressure upstream and downstream of an orifice plate. These pressure taps are crucial components of an orifice plate flow measurement system and are essential for accurately determining the differential pressure (ΔP) across the orifice plate. Here's how orifice plate taps work and why they are necessary:

  1. Purpose:

    • Orifice plate taps serve two primary purposes:
      • To measure the pressure upstream (P₁) of the orifice plate.
      • To measure the pressure downstream (P₂) of the orifice plate.
    • The pressure difference between these two points (ΔP = P₁ - P₂) is directly proportional to the flow rate of the fluid passing through the orifice plate, as per Bernoulli's equation.
  2. Location:

    • Orifice plate taps are typically located at specific distances upstream and downstream of the orifice plate. These distances are specified by flow measurement standards such as ISO 5167 or ASME MFC-3M to ensure accurate flow measurement.
    • The upstream tap is positioned at a distance of 1 or 2 pipe diameters (D) upstream of the orifice plate, while the downstream tap is located at a distance of 0.5 or 1 pipe diameter downstream of the plate.
  3. Design:

    • Orifice plate taps are usually small-diameter holes (typically 1/4" to 3/8" in diameter) drilled into the pipe wall at the specified locations.
    • They are perpendicular to the flow direction to ensure accurate pressure measurement.
    • The taps are often fitted with threaded connections or flanges to facilitate the installation of pressure transmitters or gauges for pressure measurement.
  4. Pressure Measurement:

    • Pressure transmitters, gauges, or manometers are connected to the orifice plate taps to measure the upstream and downstream pressures.
    • The pressure difference (ΔP) measured between the two taps is proportional to the square of the flow rate according to Bernoulli's equation and can be used to calculate the flow rate of the fluid passing through the orifice plate.
  5. Accuracy and Calibration:

    • Proper positioning and sizing of orifice plate taps are critical for accurate flow measurement. Any deviation from the specified tap locations can lead to errors in flow measurement.
    • Orifice plate taps should be calibrated periodically to ensure accurate pressure measurement and flow calculation.

In summary, orifice plate taps play a vital role in orifice plate flow measurement systems by providing the necessary pressure measurements for calculating flow rates accurately. Proper installation, positioning, and calibration of taps are essential for reliable flow measurement in various industrial applications.
