Understanding Letter Grades and GPA
Whether you are a high school student applying for college or a university student tracking your academic progress, understanding how to convert your Letter Grade to GPA (Grade Point Average) and vice versa is essential. This guide explains the definitions and calculations used in the converter above.
What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a standard way of measuring academic achievement in the United States and many other countries. It represents the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time.
While letter grades (A, B, C…) provide a qualitative assessment of your performance, GPA converts those letters into a numerical scale (typically 0.0 to 4.0) to calculate an exact average.
The 4.0 Scale Conversion Table
Most institutions use the 4.0 scale. Below is the standard conversion chart used by our tool:
| Letter Grade | Percent Grade | GPA Scale |
|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 93-100% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90-92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87-89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83-86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80-82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77-79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73-76% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70-72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67-69% | 1.3 |
| D | 65-66% | 1.0 |
| F | Below 65% | 0.0 |
Example: How to Calculate GPA?
To calculate your cumulative GPA manually, follow these steps:
- Convert: Turn every letter grade into its numerical GPA value (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0).
- Multiply: Multiply the GPA value by the number of credits assigned to that specific course to get your “Grade Points.”
- Add: Add up all your Total Grade Points.
- Divide: Divide the Total Grade Points by the Total Number of Credits.
Calculation Example:
Math (3 credits): A (4.0) → 3 x 4.0 = 12 points
History (3 credits): B (3.0) → 3 x 3.0 = 9 points
Total Points = 21
Total Credits = 6
GPA = 21 / 6 = 3.5
