The EV Charging Time Formulas

Calculating how long it takes to charge an electric vehicle depends on the battery size, the state of charge window you are trying to fill, and the speed of your charger after factoring in standard system efficiency losses.

The standard steps to calculate charging time are outlined below:

Step 1: Calculate Net Energy Needed (kWh)

Determine the total capacity in kilowatt-hours (kWh) needed to go from your starting charge level to your target level:

Net Energy Needed (kWh) = Battery Capacity (kWh) × [(Target % − Starting %) ÷ 100]

Step 2: Adjust Charging Power for System Efficiency (kW)

Onboard conversions and battery thermal management limit actual intake speed. This gives us the true power entering the battery pack:

Effective Charge Power (kW) = Charger Output (kW) × (Charging Efficiency % ÷ 100)

Step 3: Calculate Estimated Duration (Hours)

Divide the required energy by the adjusted charge power to find the raw hours, then convert the remaining decimal fraction to minutes:

Important Variables That Modify Charging Speed

While the linear calculations above are accurate for home AC chargers, real-world variables can alter charging times—especially when using public fast chargers.

1. The DC Fast Charging “Taper” Curve

When charging via DC Fast Charging (Level 3), the car does not charge at a constant rate. To protect the battery cells from heat stress and degradation, the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS) slows down the charge speed as the battery fills up.

This is commonly referred to as the charging taper. Typically, an EV will charge at high speed from 10% to roughly 65% or 80%. Past 80%, the speed drops significantly—often to AC speeds—making the final 20% take as long to charge as the first 80%. This is why EV manufacturers recommend unplugging at 80% SoC during road trips to maximize travel efficiency.

2. Onboard Charger Limitations (AC Charging)

When charging at home or at a public Level 2 charger, your speed is limited by your vehicle’s Onboard Charger (OBC). If your vehicle has an 11 kW OBC, but you plug into a public 22 kW AC station, your car will still only accept 11 kW. You cannot exceed the physical bottleneck of your vehicle’s AC conversion hardware.

3. External Temperature

Lithium-ion chemistry depends on chemical reactions that slow down in cold weather. If the battery pack is cold, the BMS will limit incoming power to prevent lithium plating, which can permanently damage the battery cells. Many modern electric cars feature a pre-conditioning system that pre-heats the battery on your way to a fast charger to ensure maximum charging speed.
