The Speedometer Error Formulas

A vehicle’s speedometer does not track actual ground speed. Instead, it measures the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft or wheel speed sensors and multiplies it by a pre-programmed constant based on factory tire circumference. Step 1: Calculate Tire Diameter (Inches)

Standard P-metric tire sizes represent width in millimeters, aspect ratio as a percentage of width, and wheel size in inches. To compute total tire diameter:

Modifying your vehicle’s factory tire dimensions changes how the vehicle registers speed and mileage:

1. Taller Tires make the Speedometer Read Slow

If you mount a larger tire (e.g., upgrading from a 26-inch to a 28-inch overall diameter), each revolution of the wheel covers more distance. Because the vehicle’s computer still assumes the smaller original tire is turning, your actual speed over the ground will be faster than what is displayed on your speedometer. This creates a risk of unknowingly speeding.

2. Shorter Tires make the Speedometer Read Fast

If you mount a smaller tire, each wheel revolution covers less ground. Your speedometer will read faster than your actual vehicle speed. While less likely to result in a speeding ticket, this overstatement means you are traveling slower than you think.

3. Legal and Safety Standards (UN ECE Regulation 39)

Automotive manufacturers build in small safety margins to ensure compliance with international laws. Under UN ECE Regulation 39, speedometers are legally permitted to overestimate speed (by up to 10% + 4 km/h) to prevent drivers from accidentally speeding [7]. 4. The Odometer and Mileage Impact
