1. Why Are Marine Speeds Measured in "Knots"?
The term "knot" dates back to the 16th century when sailors measured the speed of their ships using a device called a "common log." This was a wooden board attached to a long rope that had physical knots tied at regular intervals of 47 feet and 3 inches.
The board was tossed into the water, and as the ship sailed away, a sailor would count how many knots passed through his hands in 28 seconds (measured with an hourglass). If 15 knots ran out, the ship was moving at "15 knots," which corresponds to 15 nautical miles per hour.
2. The Dynamic Nature of Mach Speed
Mach speed is unique because the speed of sound is not a fixed physical constant like the speed of light. Instead, sound is a mechanical vibration that travels by bouncing off molecules in a gas or liquid medium. Because molecules move faster and possess more kinetic energy in warmer air, sound travels faster through warm air and slower through cold air.
Consequently, at sea level on a standard day (15°C), Mach 1 is 761.2 mph. However, at a high altitude of 35,000 feet, where the air temperature drops to roughly -56°C, the speed of sound slows down to approximately 660 mph. An aircraft traveling at 660 mph at high altitude is moving at Mach 1, even though it would be subsonic at sea level.
